QUB Celebrates Outstanding REF 2021 Results for Social Work and
Social Policy
We are delighted that Social Work and Social Policy at QUB has been
ranked at 12th
in the UK as featured in the Times Higher Education REF
2021 subject rankings (Times Higher Education Social Work and Social Policy UoA table).
The Research Excellence Framework (REF) provides a robust and thorough assessment of the
quality of universities' research in all disciplines, providing accountability for public investment in
research and demonstrating the benefits of that investment. The assessment is carried out by
panels of academics and international experts. Over 88% of research submitted to REF2021 by
researchers based in the Social Work and Social Policy Unit of Assessment at QUB was judged
to be World Leading or Internationally Excellent by a peer review panel. 75% of impact case
studies submitted were judged to be World Leading in terms of their impact beyond academia.
This is a fantastic endorsement of the depth and quality of our research and our partnerships
with colleagues in the community, health sector, criminal justice system, care sector,
government and policy sector. We look forward to continuing this exciting work in the future.

Ulster Social Work and Social Policy team
celebrate world-leading research
The Social Work and Social Policy team at Ulster are thrilled to be recognised
for our world leading and internationally excellent research (92%). Being
ranked 8th
in the UK for such research activity recognises the high-quality
research that our team undertakes. Our Social Care team developed one of the strongest impact
case studies on reproductive rights in Northern Ireland while our Social Work team returned
more staff than in any previous cycle. Our research-led teaching and societal impact focus make
Ulster a great place to study Social Work at our Magee Campus and Health and Social Care
Policy at our new Belfast Campus. Information on our courses can be found here:
