What is a Learning Disability?
The term 'learning disability' is a widely used and accepted term in the UK (NICE, 2014).
According to the Department of Health (2001:14), a learning disability includes the
presence of;
• A significantly reduced ability to understand new or complex information, to learn new
skills (impaired intelligence) with;
• A reduced ability to cope independently (impaired functioning)
• Which started before adulthood, with a lasting effect on development.
