experience of young people
Abstract
Context
This study was undertaken as part of a course of study in research
Methods and Professional Development in social work. The author is
employed as social worker within fostering team in the South Eastern
Trust.
Young people ageing out from foster care face many challenges in their
diverse futures. They are represented in higher numbers in terms of
unemployment, homelessness, early parenthood, and criminal justice
involvement than their non-care counterparts. Their transition to adulthood
is rapid and compressed. This study seeks to explore the experiences of
these young people in terms of this journey, at this most crucial juncture in
their lives. It explores the supports they experienced along the way.
Methodology and Methods used
The study employed the use of a Thematic Analysis of interviews
undertaken with ten young people between the ages of 17 to 25 years and
five experienced foster carers. From the recorded and transcribed
interviews, codes and themes emerged outlining the experience of ageing
out or transitioning from foster care to independence. These include
amongst others, Transitions, Who Cares, Resilience and Too Young to
Leave.
Findings
The findings revealed a broad range of experience within the participants
This was a small scale study but findings reflected research conducted
elsewhere. Young people interviewed experienced a range of positive
supports as well as having experienced poor support. Many had numerous
social workers over their time in care. Four of the young people were
parents at a young age. All recognised the importance of education
however the range of educational attainment within the group was broad,
from poor school attendance to University graduates.
