Title of Study
Staff experience and perceptions of assessing
individuals with a dual sensory loss and learning
disability
Abstract
Context
Dual sensory loss and learning disability is a historically neglected area of
practice. Recent inspections of Trust sensory disability services and the
ensuing work on identification and prevalence of individuals with a dual
sensory loss highlighted the need to develop services in this area.
In response, this local research study aimed to explore current practice in
the assessment of individuals with a dual sensory loss and learning
disability.
Methodology and Methods used
Qualitative methodology was used. Semi structured interviews were
undertaken with 12 staff members from Southern Health and Social Care
Trust who had direct experience of assessing individuals with a dual
sensory loss and learning disability.
Findings
Individuals with a dual sensory loss and learning disability present with
complex, unique communication needs which impacts on the participants'
ability to engage with them. Participants use a range of tools and resources
in attempt to put the individual in the centre of the assessment process. In
order to gather information, they work in partnership with parents, carers
and other professionals. Observation of the individual across settings is
key in informing the assessment. Delivering training in this area is a
challenge due to the unique needs of each of the individuals discussed.
