Title of Study
Restorative approaches with families in elder
abuse
Abstract
Context
This qualitative study presents the findings of a systematic narrative
literature review and research undertaken with social workers across adult
services in the Northern Health and Social Care Trust area on the subject of
'restorative approaches with families in elder abuse cases.' The study
recognised that there are currently few restorative approaches which social
workers can refer to when formal processes have been concluded or are
not appropriate. The research sought therefore to explore social workers'
experiences of safeguarding work, awareness of current or alternative
approaches and any new ideas or potential challenges.
Methodology and Methods used
Nine focus groups with 37 social workers from a range of adult teams within
the NHSCT and Women's Aid were undertaken. They provided a body of
qualitative information which was coded and thematically analysed using
NVivo software.
Findings
The main findings are:
The need for further research on the area of restorative approaches.
Review and standardisation of risk assessment model is required.
Training needs identified are awareness raising for all staff and
training on restorative approaches for specialist staff.
Identification of a specialist team to take this training forward.
Embed risk and decision making in post qualifying training at all levels.
