The participants identified that spending time with staff to build
relationships had positive outcomes for them as adults. Their responses
highlighted fond memories of trips away, learning from each other and
continuing the relationship into the future.
Discussion of Results
The method of self-characterisation was beneficial not only in terms of
exploring rich meaningful qualitative data but the actual process was
appreciated by the participants as a way to reflect on their experiences
and to share with those who care for children in residential care.
Conclusions and Recommendations
The staff in Children's Homes have an important role in the lives of
the children and young people they care for. This evaluation supports
previous research that indicates what young people feel, need and want
from their relationships with staff. Spending time getting to know each
other is central to building relationships.
Further exploration of the staff-child relationship is recommended.
