Findings from foster carers revealed that all young people demonstrated
resilience to different degrees. Within the interview narratives, resilience
was evident, though not necessarily recognised by young people.
Discussion of results
Limitations were explored in terms of the cohort studied being small, and
therefore not being representative of the overall population of young people
ageing out from foster care. Access to young people was also discussed in
terms of hard to reach young people.
Findings are discussed in relation to similar research and current policy
around young people ageing out of foster care is explored.
Conclusions and Recommendations
A number of recommendations are drawn from the findings including,
exploration of family group conference as a means of utilising appropriate
family support to prevent isolation, mentoring support, extension of
services for young people beyond age 18 to 21 years. Further research in
the area of young people ageing out of foster care is required.
